Current Ag Issues

This page is to summarize posts which cover Ag issues of current interest. The content of this page will change fairly rapidly. For example, as I write this on May 18, 2011, late planting issues are a concern. However in August the issues may be dry weather or a pest problem.

Posted May 21, 2012: An early post when I first started thinking dry weather might be a real concern this year.

Posted May 23, 2012: A followup to the May 21 post with some additional thoughts from Bob Nielsen.

Posted June 15, 2012: This post links to a summary of a June 15 conference call discussing this spring's dry conditions.

Posted June 22, 2012: This post has a link to Purdue Agronomy's Drought Information Page.

Posted June 26, 2012: This post has a link to a new article by Bob Nielsen related to drought/heat stress in crops.

Posted June 27, 2012: Another drought post which includes a link to a University of Maryland drought publication which discusses options in case you have trouble filling grain contracts.

Posted June 28, 2012: This post includes a link to an article by Purdue Ag Economist Chris Hurt on strategies for filling grain contracts in case of poor yields.

Posted July 18, 2012: This is a summary of a drought program we had July 13 at the Clinton County Fair.
